Are you trying to find top things to do in Murphys, CA, for a wine country getaway? If you want to plan a wine-centric getaway, you’ve chosen the perfect place. Our charming little town of Murphys is more off the beaten path (in other words, less crowded and expensive) and just as delightful as major wine regions throughout California.
With an adorable downtown, scenic outdoor recreation, and many wineries, Murphys is the perfect place for a romantic getaway or family vacation. This 3-day itinerary will help you plan the perfect trip with suggestions on which wineries to visit, attractions to see, places to eat, and best places to stay in Calaveras County.
Day 1: Wine Tasting and History
California is the wine capital of the United States, and it’s not just limited to Sonoma or Napa Valley. Nestled in the foothills of the Sierras, Murphys is a quaint little Gold Rush-Era town. Its unique geography has left it with a legacy of beautiful wineries and a rich history. To better appreciate this, we thought the first day of your trip should focus on experiences that reflect the history and culture of Calaveras County:
Ironstone Vineyard
Ironstone Vineyards has a rich history deeply rooted in the vision of John Kautz, a row crop farmer who transitioned to vineyards in 1948. Originally just 12 acres, today Ironstone is a fourth-generation family operation known for its commitment to quality and artistry in winemaking.
This winery is worth visiting for its award-winning wines, gorgeous grounds, and visitor center (built from limestone and schist). Go on an estate tour, sample the wines, and stop at the cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. This vineyard offers the quintessential Murphy, CA, wine-tasting experience.
Angels Camp Museum
While you could easily spend the entire day at the vineyard, we highly recommend learning about the area’s history at Angels Camp Museum. Just a short drive from Murphys, the museum delves into the history of the California Gold Rush. You can stroll through 3 acres of beautifully kept grounds to see the extensive outdoor and indoor exhibits. Visitors can see mining equipment and one of the country’s largest collections of wagons and carriages.
The museum grounds also have a gift shop and Calaveras Visitor Center, where you can buy gifts and souvenirs.
Downtown Murphys
Downtown Murphys is very compact, making it easy to visit even after a day of walking and exploration. It has much to offer in terms of wining and dining, but this would be a great time to check out some of the dozens of cute shops and galleries (don’t worry, we’ll circle back to wining and dining):
-
- Nelson’s Candies: Located in Frog Tooth’s Winery on Main Street, this old-fashioned sweets shop has an impressive variety of handmade candies.
- Murphys Village Toy Store: A family-owned store with a vast selection of unique toys, games, and puzzles.
- The Spice Tin: Do you love to cook? Here, you’ll find over 17 spices, salts, herbs, and blends. For those looking for a gourmet experience, there is so much to smell and taste.
- Art on Main: This art gallery stocks artwork, jewelry, and other gifts from local artists. You can shop or simply admire the artwork.
- Quyle Kilns: Family-owned and operating since 1941, this handmade pottery shop also offers tours of its production facilities.
- Marisolio Tasting Bar: Would it be a California town in wine country without an olive oil-tasting bar? If you want to sample the local oils and vinegars of Calaveras County, this is the place!
Dinner at Murphys Pourhouse
After exploring the shops, stay on Main Street for dinner. Eat and recount the day’s adventures over local craft beers (16 rotating taps to explore) and gourmet sandwiches at Murphys Pourhouse. This local favorite takes comfort food to a whole new level.
Day 2: Outdoor Adventures
Your first day eased you into the charm of Murphys, but now it’s time to see what truly makes Murphys so unique — the beauty of this region cannot be overstated. These things to do in Calaveras County, CA, present nature at its finest:
Calaveras Big Trees State Park
Many visitors return from Calaveras Big Trees State Park and swear it’s one of the most beautiful places they’ve ever been (we agree). The park preserves two groves of giant sequoias, the North Grove and South Grove. The North Grove Trail is the easiest but still offers spectacular views of the giant sequoias.
As if giant sequoia trees weren’t enough, visitors can also see ancient volcanic formations, hiking trails, and the Stanislaus River. Grab a brochure before you start, as it will help fill in the details of the wonders you see. Avid hikers will also enjoy the nearby Arnold Rim Trail.
Mercer Caverns
Depending on how much time you spend with the giant sequoias, you may enjoy visiting Mercer Caverns. This deep underground cavern has a series of rooms with beautiful limestone formations. There are three caverns near Murphys, but we prefer this one for the variety of unique crystal formations. While Mercer Cavern is easier to navigate than Moaning Cavern, visitors should still know the tour will involve climbing steep stairs.
The provided tour explains the cave’s entire history. It is easily reached from downtown Murphys and is open for guided tours year-round.
Dinner at the House of Pita
This beloved Mediterranean spot is a local favorite known for its delicious gyros and extensive wine list. Enjoy your meal in their outdoor seating (weather permitting).
Day 3: Relaxation
Your trip has taken you all over Calaveras County. This day should be one of relaxation and reflection. We recommend visiting downtown Murphys to explore the smaller local wineries, including Newsome Harlow Wines, Boyle MacDonald Wines, and Hovey Winery.
This would also be a great time to catch up on some much-needed R&R at Jillian Day Spa & Salon for a massage. If the weather permits, this would also be a great time to lounge at the pool at one of our Murphys, CA, vacation rentals.
Once you’ve had enough time to unwind, it’s time for dinner! Head over to Grounds, an enduring neighborhood favorite with a bar and outdoor seating. Open later than most places, this is a great place to spend the last few hours of the day.
